At its core, why inflation still matters

August 03, 2023

Three lines show year-over-year percentage changes for headline CPI, core CPI, and sticky-price CPI from the start of 2017 through June 2023. Headline CPI dropped to near zero in May 2020 before rising sharply, reaching a peak of almost 9% in June 2022 before falling to 3% in June 2023. Core and sticky CPI did not reach those peaks and troughs. Core CPI ended at 4.8% and sticky CPI ended at 5.8% in June 2023.
