Tracking error, the often-overlooked cost

Year to date through July 31, 2023, MUB had an excess return ranging from a high of positive 0.07% to a low of negative 0.10% and a tracking error of 0.05%. Over a one-year period, it had an excess return ranging from 0.17% to –0.14% and a tracking error of 0.28%. Over three years, it had an excess return ranging from 0.17% to –0.18% and a tracking error of 0.23%. Over five years, it had an excess return ranging from 0.17% to –0.27% and a tracking error of 0.29%. Schwab Municipal Bond ETF, with a ticker symbol of SCMB, has an inception date of October 12, 2022, and an expense ratio of 0.03%. Year to date through July 31, 2023, SCMB had an excess return ranging from a high of positive 0.09% to a low of negative 0.13% and a tracking error of 0.08%. Because this ETF is less than one year old, there are no performance data available yet for periods of one year or longer.
